Hi, welcome to another article. This time article is not about Arduino or raspberry etc. but here I shall explain “How to use YwRobot Power MB V2 Power Supply”. This is an ideal power supply to power up the breadboard and most of the sensors used with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and NodeMCU. Very good equipment for prototyping purposes. It has pair of selectable 3.3V / 5V output powers. These output powers don’t have to be the same. You can use 5V for Arduino from one end and 3.3V for any other module from another end. It was manufactured in china by YwRobot Corporation. This is a very simple article to teach anyone how this module works and to use it for your project.
Its input voltage range is 6.5-12 V DC for best working. You can power up it using a Barrel socket. The central pin of the Barrel socket is positive, however, you may check for your module. There is also the option of a Female USB port to power it up.
Output Voltage and Current
It has a dual output voltage. 5V / 3.3 V with maximum 700 mA Current. There are jumpers available for selecting either 5V or 3.3V for both sides. It became very easy to use both power sources independently due to these jumpers.
The below figures shows different combinations of jumper for the selection of appropriate output voltage.
For 5V output
To select the 5V output option, place the jumper on 5V pins. You can select both outputs as 5V or any one of them.
For 3V output.
To select the 3.3V output option, place the jumper on 3.3V pins. You can select both outputs as 3.3V or anyone at 3.3V.
You can also set any or both outputs at 0V or no voltage mode by placing jumper at Off position (It is located between 5V and 3.3V options).
Additional Breakout Board
There is also an additional breakout board in the center which can also be used as an output power source as shown in the figure.
This is also most useful when you do not want to power a breadboard and directly want to connect this output power to any sensor etc.
Turning OFF either outputs or any output
To turn OFF any output place jumper at pin 2 and 3 of output as shown below. You can turn any or both outputs OFF in this way.
Separate ground pins for 5V / 3.3V.
Length: The size of “YURobot Power MB V2” is very small. It is approximately 2.1-inch in length and 1.4-inch in width.
Attaching with Breadboard
Pins of “YURobot Power MB V2” are aligned according to the rail of the breadboard so it is very easy to attach with the breadboard as shown in the figure.
Multipurpose UBS Connector
A USB connector to supply power to any external device.
This module uses two ASM1117 regulators. One is used for 5V output and the other is used for 3.3V output. These regulators have built-in protection against short circuit and also have thermal overload protection circuitry. This thermal overload protection will operate if the junction temperature reaches 165C.
It using the ON/OFF latching button for turning the power supply ON or OFF.
Power Indication using green color Light Emitting Diode (LED) to indicate ON status.
